The Confederate Flag Isn’t the Problem!

“Christ teaches us to love the homosexual, but he also teaches us to stand in the gap against sin” this is just one of many idiotic phases South Carolina State Senator Lee Bright said to kick off the debate about removing the Confederate flag from the statehouse. Hey, I mean you have to give it to him for going out on a limb to put the heat on same-sex marriage (oh the abomination!) rather than discuss the topic at hand: removal of the confederate flag. But it seems like the typical go-to tactic of the right-wing: create a distraction rather than actually coming up with a viable solution.

I wonder if Senator Bright minored in theater because his performance was quite passionate! You really should take a couple minutes to see this nut-job rant on about how “we can rally together and talk about a flag all we want but the devil is taking control of this land and we’re not stopping him!” The devil he is talking about are equal + civil rights policies, or more simply put its the GAYS fault! How dare equality take priority over racism?

 

South Carolina State Senate voted today to remove the confederate flag from the state house – so that is the “good news” of this story. Yes, there are crazy hateful-racist-bigots out there but their numbers are dwindling. The nation is changing, which is something all political parties can agree upon, but regardless of what losers like Sen. Bright think, it is changing for the better. Equality matters. Black lives matter. Gay lives matter. Everyone matters! 14th Amendment – Equal Protection.

More Stupid from the South – Jindal Bans Gay Marriage

Just a few days ago, Louisiana governor Piyush “Bobby” Jindal said “We don’t have a choice, our agencies will comply with the court order” in response to the Supreme Court’s decision on marriage for same-sex couples.  Jindal promised to respect the ruling.

Not a week has past since he made that promise. Jindal’s spokesperson Mike Reed told the press last night that “Jindal has decided Louisiana same-sex couples need to wait for yet another court’s decision,” The Times-Picayune reported late Wednesday night. “Our agencies will follow the Louisiana Constitution until the District Court orders us otherwise.”

Then Jindal signed an executive order giving clerks religious right to not issue marriage licenses. 

The New Civil Rights Movement journalist David Badash says “Jindal’s state-wide ban on recognizing the legally performed marriages in his own state means couples cannot change their names on drivers licenses and other important legal documents, adoptions could be on hold – or at least the names of both parents on birth certificates could be refused – and even death certificates cannot include a same-sex spouse’s name.”

Hey Piyush, guess what? You can play all the legislative games you want but you can’t stop love!

“Heritage not hate” really means “I identify with a racist agenda”

Who’s happy that the confederate flag has been officially removed as South Carolina’s state flag? I am! While most civilized people are quite happy about this progress toward true equality, there are of course those who are extremely upset over the decision. Those in opposition to the flag’s removal claim that the confederate flag is a symbol of their ancestors + heritage.

One such man in opposition, decided to waste everyones time + placed an order for a confederate flag cake at a Louisiana Walmart. Walmart denied his request since Walmart is among numerous companies that have banned the sale of confederate flags in their stores after the tragic church massacre in Charleston South Carolina earlier this month.

Obviously this caliber of person wouldn’t let Walmart get away with denying him his precious hate-cake… and so he went back to Walmart the next day +  ordered an ISIS battle flag cake. What does an ISIS cake even look like?

Well, here is is:

Have any clue what that says? I surly don’t + neither did cake-making staff at Walmart… hence why it was even made in the first place. It was a mistake that this loser knew Walmart would fall for! Walmart was forced to apologize for making an ISIS cake even though this man obviously was just fucking with Walmart to make a point that has no factual, historical proof. Vox journalist  reported: “The Confederacy itself was founded to preserve slavery and promote white supremacy (see, for example, Mississippi’s declaration of secession: “Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery — the greatest material interest of the world,” or the speech from the Confederacy’s vice president that declared the Confederacy’s cornerstone “rests upon the great truth that the Negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery — subordination to the superior race — is his natural and normal condition”).

The loser that ordered the cake, +  all the other losers that claim the confederate flag represents “Heritage Not Hate” are seriously diluted if they think they’re not racist ass holes.

Yeah, I know its harsh to say, but its the truth. People in support of the hate-flag claim that it has multiple meanings, one of them being heritage or a representation of their ancestors. Which may be true for some people. But the bottom-line-hard-fact-of-the-matter is that the confederate flag most definitely also represents slavery, oppression, and segregation. There is just no way around that one… #sorrynotsorry

When government uses + allows such hateful symbols like the confederate flag, they legitimize + even encourage discrimination + hate. People that support the confederate flag simply identify with a racist agenda + support racist policies, plain and simple.

What an incredible week we just had– the Supreme Court ruled in favor of both affordable health care + marriage equality! As I said in a previous post, I am happy beyond belief that American’s are one step closer to experiencing true equality – however – it seems we still have a far way to go. John Oliver’s popular HBO TV show Last Week Tonight, was particularly poignant in outlining the ways in which we  still demonize + discriminate against LGBT people.

John goes into the many ways in which transgender people face discrimination + hate simply by just being themselves. One interview was with a transgender solider that literally said that serving as a solider in Afghanistan “feels like a vacation because I can truly be myself.” Never thought I’d hear Afghanistan and the words “truly be myself” in the same sentence…  + the fact that this solider feels more comfortable in Afghanistan than in his own country is nothing short of tragic.

Here is a clip of Last Week Tonight in case you missed it. If you don’t have time to watch it, the main takeaway is that we as a nation must lose the labels + educate ourselves + our children on what it means to be LGBT – and here is a simple answer for you: LGBT people are simply people, no different than any other human on this earth. We are all individuals with our unique experience + perspective – therefore differentiation + labels aren’t needed because we are all the same 🙂

 

LGBTQ Workplace Discrimination

I figured I’d wait 24 hours before talking about the sad state of affairs in the majority of states in the union… I didn’t want to bring this up yesterday when Love Won! While I am ecstatic beyond belief that every American is now legally allowed to get married, the fact is 31 states do not have separate protections specifically for sexual orientation + gender identity. This means that it is completely legal for an employer to terminate employment based on a persons sexual orientation or gender identity. Check out this infograpic from Vox that shows the states that have protections for LGBTQ people and those that don’t.

Currently, 19 states ban discrimination based on sexual orientation + gender identity, while only 3 additional states ban discrimination based on sexual orientation. Equal rights activist, Michelangelo Signorile, is so right: Its Not Over!

Of course it is a monumental shift for all American’s to now have the right to marry – it seems the fight for true equality is far from over.  The lack of civil rights laws in the 31 states in the union that do not protect LGBTQ people from workplace discrimination need to be changed. Equal Protection under the law, right?

14th Amendment – Equal Protection: All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
